Shannon Chin is grateful to VGH’s medical team for saving her life, allowing her to get back home to her daughter Addison.

Shannon Chin describes how, in a devastating workplace accident in 2012, she suffered a life-threatening injury when a dump truck backed over her and dragged her 30 feet, crushing her from the chest down. “They didn’t even think I’d make it into the ambulance,” she says.

Shannon was airlifted to VGH where she spent the next two months recovering. Her intensive treatment to date has included approximately 24 procedures and countless CT scans and MRIs.

She is now back at home looking after her daughter, grateful not only to the medical experts who saved her life, but also for the CT scanners and other medical equipment that allowed her doctors to rapidly diagnose her injuries. “Without them, I wouldn’t be here.”

Currently, VGH and UBC Hospital radiologists use six CT scanners to perform more than 50,000 scans per year. Three of these scanners are aged and need to be replaced. Advancements in CT technology mean clearer images, faster results and a reduction in radiation exposure by 50-70%.

Thanks to our donors, radiologists, fundraising at our gala, and government support, we have successfully raised enough funds to purchase two of the three critically needed CT scanners. Fundraising for the final CT scanner for VGH Emergency is underway.
