For 25 years, art has played a vital role at VGH and UBC Hospital. Art is everywhere. From postmodern abstractions to coastal landscapes, the waiting rooms and corridors of Vancouver General Hospital (VGH), UBC Hospital and GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre are home to a collection of more than 2,700 works of art showcasing stunning works by some of Canada’s most acclaimed modern artists.

Current research has shown the benefits of art in the healing environment both in reducing stress and aiding in faster recovery. Did you know that looking at art can lower your blood pressure? Art is good medicine. Providing a panacea for the mind and body, VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation’s Art Collection is on the frontlines — enhancing care through the restorative power of art. Because of the nature of the health care we deliver, this artwork is accessible to the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This healing art collection represents the care and creativity of our community.

Donate a Gift of Art

The Art Collection has become the creative heart of our facilities, which are now being designed with art encounters in mind. Central to our belief in the power of art to heal, we celebrate contemporary work by prominent Canadian artists like Susan Point and David Robinson as well as artists of international stature like Robert Rauschenberg and Andy Warhol.

Our acquisitions of art are currently limited. If you would like to submit artwork for review, please read our guidelines and complete the submission form below We are currently collecting work for mental health and long-term care and rehabilitation spaces and welcome a diversity of cultural perspectives through vibrant and vital artworks that uplift and inspire.

Acceptance Guidelines

Artwork offered for donation to the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation Art Collection will be considered based on the following guidelines:

Artwork must be original or a limited edition/numbered print;
Artwork is of professional quality that maintains the integrity of the Collection;
Contents, images and colour must be appropriate for a healing environment. Artwork that may evoke negative reactions or contain controversial, political or religious imagery will not be considered;
Artwork representing cultural and ethnic diversity is welcome;
Artwork should be in good physical condition;
Materials and finishes must be safe for the healthcare environment, allowing for ease of maintenance and conservation.

All potential donations are considered on an individual basis in terms of their suitability for the hospital environment as well as in the wider context of the overall collection.
