Jorden Lo

When Jorden Lo was paid $600 for the use of his art in a movie, he did a wonderful thing – he generously donated the money to VGH.

Jorden is only 16 years old, but philanthropy isn’t new to him. He’s been volunteering at VGH for over a year, and says he wanted to do even more to make a difference. A young artist and philanthropist in the making, Jorden also aspires to be a doctor one day, and plans to attend UBC. “By volunteering, I meet people from different walks of life, hear their stories, and learn from them,” says Jorden. “VGH is such a wonderful hospital and does so many great things for people…I just wanted to make a difference to the best of my ability.”

Volunteers read aloud, visit isolated seniors, and provide companionship.

We are immensely proud of all these volunteers (over 500 of them!), who dedicate countless hours of their time helping others, whether it’s working in the gift shop, providing companionship or giving directions to visitors. For many patients, VGH’s volunteers provide a bright spot in what may be a lonely, painful or difficult day.
We’re also humbled by people like Jorden who show us that you don’t have to be a millionaire to make a difference: every single dollar donated helps provide the very best hospital care for adults in the province. To Jorden – thank you! – and thanks to all those who donate time and money to our health services

SIDE BAR STORY: OUR VOLUNTEERS ARE AMAZING
All year long, they bring their enthusiasm, their smiling faces and their talents to support patients and families at VGH, UBC Hospital, GF Strong Rehab Centre and Vancouver Community Health Services.

They assist visitors in hospital lobbies, read aloud to patients, accompany elderly clients to medical appointments, shop for those who are housebound, and so much more.

At VGH alone, volunteers gave over 40,758 hours of their time in the last year. Vancouver Community volunteers made 1,100 visits to isolated seniors and disabled adults, and assisted nurses at 1,700 child health clinics and parent/infant drop-in sessions.

Beyond help with basic tasks and assistance with errands, volunteers offer companionship, compassion and a warm smile to everyone they meet.
