Grateful ICU nurses Suzanne Miller, Lynette Brandsma and Claudette Lacasse

Galina Tsvasman was a teacher who made a meaningful difference to her students. She was a kind, giving person who loved helping others. And she was dearly loved by everyone around her, including her husband of 48 years, Vladimir.

When Galina became severely ill due to heart complications, she spent her last days in VGH’s Intensive Care Unit. After her passing, Vladimir was so touched by the warmth and compassion of the ICU nurses, he set up a $10,000 bursary, the Galina Tsvasman Bursary Fund for Education, to help VGH ICU nurses pursue continuing education.

For Vladimir, the bursary is a fitting way to recognize VGH’s outstanding ICU nurses, and honour his wife’s love of teaching. “This is in gratitude for what they did over the last days Galina was there,” says Vladimir. “At VGH, their hearts are there. The nurses were like part of my family.”

Like Vladimir, we are so proud of all our nurses, who continue to demonstrate compassion and care for our patients and families.
