In a single evening, more than 600 medical, business and community leaders brought in record-breaking donations.

Sometimes a great party can have a serious purpose. Our 2012 Night of a Thousand Stars Gala, a black tie event held at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, was both. On that one evening, members of the community raised an impressive $720,000 for patient care and medical research at our hospitals and health care centres.

One of the best parts? While the dinner and dancing were fantastic, we were most excited that some of the money raised funded critical care ventilators. For health care practitioners and patients, this is a lifeline.

Multiple departments at VGH provide critical care to patients each day – including the Intensive Care Unit, Cardiac Surgery and the Emergency Department – and all desperately need new ventilators to replace models that are over a decade old. At VGH’s Intensive Care Unit alone, 90% of patients require artificial ventilation. Thanks to our generous donors, VGH is literally breathing life into patients.

Dancing and raising money for a good cause put smiles on everyone’s faces.

This night was a wonderful opportunity to honour both our visionary donors and the dedicated and highly skilled teams of health care professionals and researchers at VGH, UBC Hospital, GF Strong Rehab Centre and Vancouver Community Health Services.

We continue to be wowed by the efforts of all of the important individuals who helped create a brilliant night to remember. Their commitment and contribution extends well beyond this one evening; their long-standing support ensures delivery of BC’s best, most specialized care for adults.
