Vancouver artist Gina Sarro donates work to the Art Program to improve hospital experience for patients, visitors and staff.

When her relative was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, Vancouver artist Gina Sarro found herself spending a lot of time at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH), including walks down the hallways to try to take her mind off her concern for her loved one.

“I noticed the beautiful works of art on the walls and it became a way for me to take my mind off of waiting and worrying,”  recalls Gina.

Having experienced first-hand the incredible impact seeing art in a hospital can have on mental well-being, Gina was inspired to give back. She got in touch with Jim O’Hara who manages the Art Program at VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation and donated a piece of her own artwork to the collection.

Supported by donations and dedicated volunteers, the Art Program seeks to improve the hospital experience for patients, visitors and staff through the therapeutic power of art at VGH, UBC Hospital and GF Strong Rehab Centre. Today, more than 1,200 pieces by notable artists grace the walls of our hospitals, all donated by local artists and collectors.

“The shared appreciation of a piece of art can bring people together,” says Gina. “It can help a grieving family member by giving them hope, lifting their spirits and changing their outlook on the situation.”
