VGH nurse wins big in Hometown Heroes Lottery

Registered Nurse Eunice Uy wins Hometown Heroes Lottery in support of VGH.

Have you ever wondered who actually wins the Hometown Heroes Lottery? This year, a Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) nurse won $25,000.

“I was really excited to find out that I won a prize,” says Eunice Uy. “It was funny because I didn’t know it was the early bird draw on that day and I got several phone calls from VGH but I thought it was staffing so I kept ignoring their calls until someone left me a message. I was thinking it was just a small prize but I was really surprised to find out that it was actually $25,000!”

Eunice says that she’s been buying the Hometown Heroes Lottery tickets for years without any expectations.

“I’ve been purchasing Heroes Lottery tickets for the last three years because it goes towards a good cause, but at the same time there’s also an opportunity to win,” she explains. “Honestly, I didn’t feel bad about purchasing the tickets even if I didn’t win.”

So what will she do with the big winnings?

“I’m not sure,” she says. “I’ll probably put the money towards a down payment on a house and set some aside for travelling.”

Our lotteries support expensive medical equipment and pioneering research for the latest treatments at VGH, UBC Hospital, Vancouver Community Health Services and GF Strong Rehab Centre.

Lotteries help buy urgently needed equipment

When you buy a ticket to the Foundation’s Hometown Heroes Lottery or the Millionaire Lottery, you’re helping fund research and urgently needed medical equipment at Vancouver General Hospital, UBC Hospital, GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre, Vancouver Community Health Services and Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute.

Lottery funds have an immediate impact on patient care by supporting the purchase of essential equipment that support a wide range of areas. Last year, $4.5M was raised with $803,377 distributed to fund research projects and $3,659,828 to purchase urgently needed equipment.

Replacing and purchasing new equipment is always a priority at the hospital sites and the lottery funds go a long way in ensuring our health care teams have the tools needed to provide patient outcomes.

The demands on keeping pace with health care needs and equipment has never been greater. With the use of lottery funds and donations, the Foundation is better able to ensure your loved ones receive the best treatment available.

“Lottery proceeds fund urgently needed medical equipment at VGH that we would not be able to purchase without the support of our lottery ticket buyers. On behalf of the patients and staff at VGH, thank you so much to all our lottery supporters!”
