Cordula Paetzold was a strong, compassionate community leader who championed health education throughout her life. Cordula passed away in 2012, but her legacy continues through her generous donation to support the Centre of Excellence for Simulation Education & Innovation (CESEI) and many other initiatives at VGH and UBC Hospital.

More than 5,000 medical staff, trainees, and students use CESEI every year to learn and practice a wide range of surgical techniques and treatments. A high-tech classroom, CESEI combines medical education and research with technology.

Cordula’s legacy gift funded Harvey, CESEI’s cardiopulmonary Patient Simulator.

“Harvey realistically simulates cardiac diseases at the touch of a button, by varying blood pressure, pulse and heart sounds,” explains Dr. Karim Qayumi, CESEI Director. “Trainees can practice surgical procedures over and over, thus ensuring patients will receive a higher standard of surgical care.”

With visionary donors like Cordula, we are able to provide world-class medical training and education that will benefit patients for future generations to come.
