Meeting Patients Where They Are
Health care is changing. From supporting an aging population living longer with chronic illnesses to facilitating mental wellness and offering more services in the community. Our goal is for all patients to have access to the care they need — especially those who are vulnerable.
With your support, we can pilot and accelerate new approaches to offer the right care, at the right time and in the right place: home, neighbourhood or hospital.
What do community donors support?
- Enhancing services that will better meet the needs of the changing demographics of BC
- Serving vulnerable members of our community more effectively through additional resources and partnerships, especially in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES)
- Caring for emotional and spiritual needs of patients and their families
- Offering state-of-the-art rehabilitation services at GF Strong Rehab Centre
- Ensuring mental health services are there when needed
- Enhancing palliative and end-of-life care
- Integrated Health Care Centres across Vancouver that provide a “one-stop shop” in their own neighbourhood
- Comprehensive approaches to working with marginalized populations
- A comprehensive approach to palliative care, like the Home Hospice Program
- New models to support seniors
- A broader range of mental health services
The Need
Whether it be mental health, seniors care or health care for our most vulnerable citizens, philanthropy can make a huge difference.
95,000 patients are seen in VGH’s Emergency Department each year.
1 in 5 Canadians are diagnosed with a mental illness in their lifetime.
The Impact
With you, we can transform health care to meet the unique needs of our diverse and aging population through a holistic strategy that ensures the right people, tools and environment support care and recovery for the mind and body.
We are committed to marginalized populations and a next generation strategy in the Downtown Eastside that aims to better address acute health crises, longstanding and complex chronic conditions and marginalized populations.
Home is Best Program is a VCH adopted system-wide approach to health care that involves hospital nurses, physicians and other health professionals working collaboratively to improve a senior’s journey across the health care system.

The Welcoming Space
“The past year has been full of opportunities and some challenges as we continue to create meaningful changes in our health care system.” – Leslie Bonshor, VP, Aboriginal Health, VCH
The Welcoming Space at VGH’s Diamond Family Courtyard is a healing, gathering space and an expression of the link between the land VGH sits on, which are the unceded and traditional territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil Waututh Nations.
Philanthropy is the key to transforming the main entryway spaces at VGH that recognize the link between Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) and the Indigenous people in VCH’s care.
Withdrawal Management Centre
Imagine a person struggling with addictions and possible trauma coming in to receive care. Then, imagine they are being asked to transport themselves across different cities and manage their appointments, in addition to having limited transportation and timekeeping options on top of these incredibly challenging issues.
Addiction is a reality for so many people who have found themselves in desperate need of help, and we need to make the system more accessible than ever so that they do not slip through the cracks.
We are fundraising for a Withdrawal Management Centre to help provide a modern solution to substance use.
