The VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation mourns the passing of Dick Bradshaw, C.M., a visionary leader, distinguished philanthropist, and longtime supporter whose generosity profoundly impacted health care and research in British Columbia.
Dick believed in building healthier lives for healthier communities — and he made it happen.
After being diagnosed with prostate cancer, Dick shared his experience to raise awareness of the disease and funds for research. While serving as Chair of the Prostate Centre at VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation (now the renowned Vancouver Prostate Centre), Dick championed groundbreaking research and world-class care in urologic sciences. Alongside his wife, Val, he made transformative gifts that fueled innovation and improved outcomes for countless patients.
Dick and Val also advanced environmental research, endowing chairs at McGill University, University of Victoria, and Simon Fraser University. His pursuits reflected a remarkable range of vision.
Dick began his career in 1961 with the Montreal Trust Company. In 1965, he joined the founding team at Phillips, Hager & North Investment Management, helping build one of Canada’s most respected investment firms.
His leadership spanned decades, serving as President and CEO (1987–1994) and later as Chairman of the Board of Directors until his retirement in 1999. His contributions were honoured with the naming of the Phillips, Hager and North Garden at the Vancouver Public Library.
Beyond business, Dick devoted his time and talent to causes that matter. He held key roles with organizations that shaped BC, including Vice Chair of the Vancouver Foundation, Chair of the Vancouver Oral School for Deaf Children, and board member of VanDusen Botanical Garden.
Dick was also an avid fisherman who supported coastal studies and fisheries research, particularly in salmon conservation. He served as Chair of the Vancouver Aquarium and Marine Science Centre.
Honoured as a Member of the Order of Canada and inducted into the Business Laureates of British Columbia Hall of Fame, Dick leaves a legacy of integrity, generosity, and enduring impact. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and the many communities he enriched.
The VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation, on behalf of our Board of Directors and our medical beneficiaries at VGH and Vancouver Coastal Health, extends heartfelt condolences to Val, Brenda and the Bradshaw family.
Repose en paix, cher ami.
