How has mental illness impacted your life?
In December of 2010 my 28 year old son attempted suicide. It came as a horrific shock, as no one knew he was suffering from depression. As he told me later , when you are so depressed you become a good actor. My outgoing, charismatic , beautiful boy was so lost and overwhelmed that we almost lost him. He spent 2 weeks in the psychiatric ward, receiving counseling by incredible caregivers, and months of therapy later. As a parent I was deeply affected by the guilt of not realizing what was happening to him. I too became depressed and attended months of group therapy. Best thing I ever did. Amazing support . My son is doing incredibly well now. We are lucky.
What is the biggest misconception about mental illness?
Mental illness does not mean you are crazy, or weak. It can happen to anyone at any time in their life.
What needs to happen to end the stigma and shame associated with mental illness?
People need to talk about it more. Not be ashamed , or embarrassed to ask for help.
Why should people (who think they are unaffected) care about mental illness?
Whether you know it or not it does affect you. It could be a family member suffering, or a friend or co worker. Just letting someone know you care about them can help.
What advice would you give to someone who is supporting and caring for someone with mental illness?
Look after yourself. I know from firsthand experience it is easy to get overwhelmed with guilt, grief, etc. I learned in counseling that you cannot control others actions and words. Attend some sort of counseling for yourself.
What are the warning signs that friends/family should look out for?
Alienating themselves from family and friends. Excessive alcohol use. Personality changes.
