John Ellis has spent a lifetime giving back to the community he loves. At 101 years old, those close to John describe him as a generous citizen who contributes both time and money to worthy causes that impact change and growth in our community.
A WWII war veteran and retired banker with the Bank of Montreal, John was also active on 36 boards and committees throughout his business/community career. His generosity and inspiration to continually push positive change is humbly driven by Montreal’s Lower Canada College (John’s alma mater) motto: “Non Nobis Solum,” meaning “Not by Ourselves Alone.”
“Everybody should give however they can,” says John. “You never know when you or someone important to you will need the support.”
John has supported VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation for over 25 years in more ways than one. He donates annually to the hospitals’ Most Urgent Needs Fund, participates in events and has left a bequest in his will to support the future of health care in BC.
“I’ve been a long-time admirer of VGH and I was especially inspired to give after receiving exceptional patient care from Dr. Andrew McFadden,” says John.
When asked about the secret of his longevity, John states, “A lot of luck, amazing family and friends, a sense of humour, and a daily dose of blueberries!”
