Health research is critical to making ground-breaking discoveries that help patients, but did you know research is also great for the economy?

Through health research, our medical teams discover cures and cutting-edge treatments for diseases such as multiple sclerosis, prostate cancer and ovarian cancer. And, through active clinical research programs at VGH and UBC Hospital, patients have access to clinical trials, which can lead to better health outcomes. But health research also has economic impacts. Clinical research contributes approximately $150 million annually to the provincial GDP, and research creates nearly 2,500 direct and indirect employment opportunities in BC. In fact, clinical research creates more employment opportunities than some  resource-based industries such as mining, oil and gas.

Even better? Research contributes to discoveries that increase survival rates and overall health, which means fewer people get sick, and hospital costs are reduced. It’s a win-win for the health of British Columbians and the economy.
