Our community has lost a remarkable soul who touched countless lives.
It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Robert Hung Ngai Ho C.M., O.B.C. Robert once said: “I have always applied the teaching of my grandfather and lived by his words; Before you receive, you must learn how to give.”
Robert and his family lived by these words.
A longtime supporter of VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation, Robert was committed to improving health care for everyone in British Columbia, funding groundbreaking research, state-of-the-art facilities, and patient care initiatives that continue to save lives.
Born in Hong Kong, Robert spent his career in journalism and managing his family’s property and investments. After his retirement, he carried forward a tradition of philanthropy inspired by his grandparents and Buddhist teachings.
In 2009, Robert made a gift to VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation that established the Robert H.N. Ho Research Centre. It opened in September 2011 and continues to house world-leading research in prostate and ovarian cancer.

The research centre has been critical to providing space that puts scientists and clinicians side by side, so questions that arise from the bedside are quickly answered, and the solutions are deployed for better patient care.
Alongside his wife, Greta, the Ho family’s donations also helped develop the Robert and Greta Ho Cardiac Investigation Centre at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH), the Robert H.N. Ho Enhancing Patient Care Fund, and the Hope Centre for Mental Health at Lions Gate Hospital.
Their philanthropy improved cardiac care in BC, supported lifelong learning for health care professionals, and raised awareness for mental health in the province.
Robert’s contributions earned him two of the highest distinctions in Canada: Member of the Order of Canada (C.M.) in 2018 and the Order of British Columbia (O.B.C.) in 2013. These honors recognize a lifetime of service and generosity — a legacy that will continue to shape lives for generations.
He didn’t stop there. In 2019, Robert continued his support for health care and innovation through the establishment of the Robert H.N. Ho Stroke Leadership Fund. His gift enhanced stroke care in B.C., improving quality of care, and accelerating innovation that saves lives.
“We have a duty to give back to society, to make our world a better place and care for our community,” said Robert.
He has — and for that we are forever grateful.
