VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation is Vancouver Coastal Health’s primary philanthropic partner, raising funds for specialized adult health care services and research for all British Columbians. VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation partners with donors to raise essential funds for Vancouver Coastal Health, supporting VGH, UBC Hospital, GF Strong Rehab Centre, Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute, and Community Health Services.
The simple truth is, if you are seriously ill or injured, our hospitals are your best chance. There are few illnesses or injuries our medical teams cannot treat, no matter how complex or rare.
VGH is one of two accredited adult Level 1 Trauma Centres in BC and, together with UBC Hospital and GF Strong, are the province’s main referral centres.

Thanks to donor support, VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation has been transforming health care in BC for 40 years with $1 billion in philanthropic funding. Here are some of the vital projects donations have supported.
Historic look back
1957
The first open heart surgery in BC takes place at VGH.
The surgery was performed on an eight-year-old boy to great success.
1960
Surgeons at VGH perform BC’s first ever organ transplant.
Today, more than 50 per cent of all life-saving organ transplants in the province happen here, saving more than 500 lives every year.
1978
VGH becomes BC’s first hospital capable of assessing heart ventricle anatomy and function,
as well as performing cardiac biopsies with the arrival of Dr. Donald Ricci.

At VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation, we partner with donors to raise essential funds over and above government funding for VGH, UBC Hospital, GF Strong Rehab Centre, Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute and Vancouver Community Health Services. Together we deliver a healthy continuum of care – from research to patient care, rehabilitation and community health services.
