Two years ago, my life changed forever. Today, I’m writing this to share my story of survival and gratitude – a story that donors like you helped to make possible.
I was working in my backyard when I heard the bang. A car in my neighbourhood had caught fire. As a firefighter, my instincts kicked in immediately and I rushed to try and stop the blaze from spreading. But without warning, the car exploded and I was engulfed in flames.
I thought I was about to die. It was surreal to be on the other side of an emergency call and rely on my fellow firefighters for help.
I was rushed to Vancouver General Hospital (VGH), one of only two Level 1 adult trauma centres in BC and the only place able to provide the world-class, specialized burn care I needed.
I’m writing this to ask that you consider making a special donation this holiday season to VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation’s Angel Campaign. Your donation will help to support the advanced treatments, cutting-edge equipment, and research that drives innovation and makes a world of difference for patients like me.
As a result of the explosion, I was left with second and third-degree burns on 41% of my body. For six grueling weeks, VGH’s BC Professional Firefighters’ Burn Unit became my home. Despite my terrible injuries, the staff were with me every step of the way.
So many angels have helped me over the past few years. The doctors, nurses, and therapists were my lifeline. They didn’t just treat my burns and help me recover — they helped strengthen my resolve.
Thanks to them, and with the unwavering support of my family, friends, and colleagues, I’ve made remarkable progress. In fact, I’m back at work, doing what I love — serving my community as a firefighter.
You can be an angel for patients like me. Make your special Angel donation today.
Thank you. I wish you and your loved ones a safe and happy holiday season.
Yours,
Massimo Cerantola
