It is with sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Frances (Fran) Belzberg, CM, OBC, who died on July 25, 2026, at the age of 99. Fran was a respected philanthropist, community leader, and member of VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation’s Patrons’ Council whose generosity and volunteer leadership touched countless lives. She was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada (OM) and later received the Order of British Columbia (OBC) in recognition of her contributions to medical research, community service, and charitable causes.
Together with her late husband, Samuel Belzberg, Fran built a remarkable legacy of philanthropy, supporting health care, medical research, education, and initiatives that promoted inclusion and understanding. She was also recognized for co-founding the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation and helping advance awareness and research for those affected by the disease.
The Foundation is grateful for Fran’s longstanding connection to our organization and for the significant contributions she and Samuel made to health care in British Columbia. The Belzbergs’ generous contributions to health care included gifts to robotic surgery, cardiac imaging, and the Marcel Dvorak Chair in Spine Trauma at Vancouver General Hospital.
Well after the passing of her husband, Samuel Belzberg, in 2018, Fran continued to attend the annual events held by Dr Brian Kwon, holder of the Dvorak Chair, to share the achievements they helped make possible.
Fran will be remembered for her zest for life, exemplified by the extraordinary act of skydiving in her 90s, among many other accomplishments. She will be remembered for her generosity, community leadership, and belief in the power of philanthropy to improve lives. Her legacy continues through the patients, families, researchers, clinicians, and communities who have benefited from her vision and support.
