You may have recently read an article from Massimo (Mass) Cerantola – a firefighter who was brought into our care not long ago.

Mass’s story is an incredible one. Today, I want to share how donors like you enable the care we provide to patients like him — and to invite you to extend your support for this care today.

Two years ago, Mass was trying to help put out a car fire in his neighbourhood. But the car exploded, leaving him with severe injuries. He was rushed to Vancouver General Hospital (VGH)’s BC Professional Firefighters’ Burn Unit with second and third degree burns on 41% of his body. Much of that was on his face, arms, and torso.

In the days and weeks after the incident, my colleagues and I worked tirelessly to treat Mass. Physicians, nurses, therapists, and many others collaborated to help guide him along the path to recovery. And while he was in immense pain, Mass’s positivity never wavered.

You can help us continue to be there for patients like Mass in their time of need.

By making an Angel donation, you can make a difference in the lives of our patients, while honouring someone who has made a difference in yours.

At VGH, we are uniquely capable of treating the most serious burn cases in the province. We are the only site in BC where severely injured burn patients can be constantly monitored and receive the specialized intensive care they need.

Donations to VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation help to fund the equipment, resources, research, and facilities needed to enable this exceptional level of care. It also allows us to increase the availability of specialized programs that promote healing and support the emotional needs of our patients – including a music therapy program, which I know Mass found very beneficial.

While he was once in critical condition, Mass is now doing incredibly well. Outcomes such as these are immensely rewarding and are an example of what we – health care professionals and donors – can accomplish by working together.

Help us give the gift of hope this holiday season. Make your Angel donation today.

With gratitude,
