Imagine losing your eyesight. This is a reality for many of Dr. David Maberley’s patients.
Every day, Dr. Maberley and his colleagues at the Eye Care Centre, located at VGH, work to restore their patients’ vision and improve their quality of life.
“Techniques are more refined now and people often regain their sight as a result, explains Dr. Maberley, Professor and Head of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at UBC. “It’s incredibly gratifying to see the positive impact we’ve been able to achieve for our patients.”
A major teaching site, the Eye Care Centre is one of BC’s largest centres for cataract surgery. It is the home to the Centre for Macular Research, Canada’s only multidisciplinary research centre for retinal disease.
Dr. Maberley is also passionate about caring for underserved populations. In 2000, he established an Eye Clinic at the Vancouver Native Health Society in the Downtown Eastside to improve access to eye care in the community.
“My father is also an ophthalmologist and has travelled to developing countries to do surgeries. I realized that we also have unmet needs in our own backyard.”
Please support ophthalmology care and research at VGH.
