Lorne couldn’t breathe. He was intubated and airlifted to Lion’s Gate Hospital. But doctors decided that he needed a level of care that only Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) could provide.
He had a fever and headache, the hallmark signs of a virus. But he didn’t present with any classic symptoms like a runny nose or red eyes.
Lorne went into complete cardiovascular respiratory failure. Few diseases act this fast and after tests, doctors learned the Lorne contracted hantavirus.
Hantavirus has a 50% mortality rate. But Lorne is a hantavirus survivor thanks to the world-class care at VGH. More than 50% of VGH patients are referred from outside Metro Vancouver for subspecialized care they can’t get anywhere else.
The generosity of donors ensures care teams are equipped with the cutting-edge equipment to save lives like Lorne’s.
