A new era in spinal care for BC
Earlier this year, the first patient was successfully treated using VGH’s revolutionary new spine robot. The robot is just one of the latest technological advancements made possible by donors like you.
“We’re one of the first in the country to acquire this robot,” says Dr. Nicolas Dea, Division Head of the Combined Neurosurgery & Orthopaedic Spine Program at VGH.“ With this technology, we will be able to improve spinal care in multiple fields, including oncology, spinal deformity, trauma and spinal cord injury. This robot will take spinal care in BC to the next level.”
“Without philanthropy, acquiring this technology would not be possible,” says Dr. Dea. “It is 100% donor-funded and we’re so lucky to have the help of amazing donors that support the investment in such technologies. It plays a crucial role in advancing health care in BC.”

A journey of hope and inspiration: Keri-Rose’s story
After a decade of living with epilepsy, nursing student Keri-Rose suffered a seizure that stopped her heart. She was referred to BC’s only Seizure Investigation Unit (SIU) at VGH, where she was diagnosed with a rare condition called Ictal Asystole. With expert care, her seizures were stabilized. Inspired by the life-changing care she received; Keri-Rose became a neurological nurse—joining the very unit that changed her life.
VGH is the provincial referral centre for epilepsy care and the only facility in BC able to diagnose and offer comprehensive treatment options for many neurological disorders. With donor support, the program has been able to double the capacity of the SIU, offer innovative treatment techniques and expand holistic patient care.
The gift of sight: Donor support advances eye care at VGH
Donor support has funded a state-of- the-art ophthalmic microscope equipped with an integrated optical coherence tomography scanner and 3D visualization system. This technology optimizes surgical precision, improves patient outcomes and enhances education by enabling the operating room team to view procedures in real-time. So far, over 500 patients have already benefited from this exciting new technology.
One of these patients was a young man with congenital night blindness who received BC’s first-ever ocular gene therapy. Surgeons used the microscope’s precision to inject medication into the subretinal space, restoring his night vision and granting him newfound independence. This breakthrough was only possible because donors helped bring this technology to VGH.
Celebrating five years of growth and healing
2024 marked the fifth year of a horticulture program for clients receiving inpatient mental health care at VGH’s Willow Pavilion and Joseph & Rosalie Segal & Family Health Centre. Thanks to the generous support of donors, this initiative continues to flourish—bringing nature, connection and healing to those on their journey to recovery.
This past year, 96 clients participated in group and individual horticultural therapy sessions that encourage them to take on responsibilities within their units and in the outdoor garden spaces. These positive experiences give clients a sense of accomplishment, structure and purpose, while enhancing mindfulness and promoting physical activity—all of which support the development of better coping skills for those experiencing mental health challenges.
